Nomenclature of Ethers

Ethers are compounds with the general formula R1-O-R2, where two alkyl or aryl groups are bonded to an oxygen atom. The names of common alkoxy substituents are derived from their alkyl components, as illustrated in the table on the right. Examples of ether nomenclature are shown on the left. The common name is indicated in blue below the IUPAC name in the top left example. Many simple ethers are symmetrical, meaning the two alkyl substituents are identical. These are named "dialkyl ethers". Examples include CH3CH2OCH2CH3, which is known as diethyl ether (often referred to as ether), and CH3OCH2CH2OCH3, which is ethylene glycol dimethyl ether (glyme).
