Norepinephrine transporter (NET), also known as Norepinephrine Transporter, is a membrane protein belonging to the monoamine transporter family. It is mainly found on the presynaptic membrane of neurons and adrenergic cells. The primary function of NET is to reuptake norepinephrine from the synaptic cleft back into the nerve terminal through an energy-dependent transport mechanism. This process terminates the neurotransmitter action of norepinephrine and is involved in regulating physiological processes such as blood pressure, heart rate, and mood. The activity of NET is regulated by various drugs and neurotransmitters. Gene mutations or abnormal expression of NET are associated with several diseases, including depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and hypertension.
