GPR24 (also known as MCHR1) is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor family, characterized by seven transmembrane domains. It is primarily expressed in the central nervous system, especially in the hypothalamus and cerebral cortex. GPR24 is involved in regulating appetite, energy balance, and sleep cycles, through recognition of signals mediated by melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH). Its specific expression and functional regulation are crucial for maintaining energy homeostasis and sleep regulation. Mutations or aberrant expression of GPR24 are associated with the development of obesity, sleep disorders, and neuropsychiatric disorders.
