Spastin is an ATPase associated with microtubule dynamics, belonging to the AAA protein family. It is predominantly expressed in the nervous system and is responsible for the severing and reorganization of microtubules, regulating cell morphology and division. Spastin is primarily localized to the centrosome and cytoskeleton. Its gene expression is tissue-specific, and its main mutations are linked to the hereditary condition Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP), characterized by progressive leg spasticity and motor impairment.
