Home Chemistry Organic Building Blocks Sulfones 1-Methyl-3-(Methylsulfonyl)Benzene
These compounds have the same murcko framework: benzene, and at least 2 kinds of functional groups( —SO2CH3,—CH3).
Sulfonation: Under certain conditions, (methylsulfonyl)benzene can be sulfonated to introduce a sulfonic acid group (-SO3H) onto the benzene ring. This can be achieved using concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and heat. The sulfonyl group is replaced by a sulfonic acid group in this reaction.
Nitration: Toluene can undergo nitration, where a nitro group (-NO2) is introduced onto the benzene ring. This reaction usually requires the presence of concentrated nitric acid and sulfuric acid as a catalyst.
