Home Chemistry Organic building blocks Sulfonyl chlorides Phenylmethanesulfonyl chloride
These compounds have the same murcko framework: benzene, and at least 1 kind of functional groups( —CH2SO2Cl).
It is often used as a reagent to convert 【alcohols|https://www.ambeed.com/alcohols.html】 into their corresponding mesylates, which are valuable intermediates in organic chemistry. This reaction is known as mesylation. The general reaction is as follows: ROH + MsCl (Phenylmethanesulfonyl chloride) → ROSO2CH3 (Mesylate) + HCl
In this reaction, the hydroxyl group (-OH) of the 【alcohol|https://www.ambeed.com/alcohols.html】 is replaced by the mesyl group (-OSO2CH3). Mesylates are useful because they are good leaving groups in various nucleophilic substitution reactions.
