The mixture was stirred at -30 C for 4 h, and then quenched by addition of water (40 mL) and aq. HC1 (50 mL, 1 M) with stirring at 0 C. The mixture was separated, and the aqueous layer was extracted with EtOAc (2 x 50 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine (2 x 50 mL), dried, filtered and concentrated under vacuum to give the crude intermediate 16 (2.1 g, 100% crude) as a colorless oil, which was used directly in next step without purification. 1H NMR: (CDC13): delta 4.97 (br, 1H), 3.10 (s, 2H), 2.17 (br, 1H), 1.44 (s, 9H), 1.20 (s, 6H).
