Abstract: Quantifying pesticides in the environment is critical for monitoring contamination and mitigating hazards in water sources.2,4,5-Trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T), a pesticide and synthetic auxin, was widely used for defoliating broad-leafed plants in agriculture. This study introduces a novel method for detecting 2,4,5-T, by combining selective preconcentration on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with flowing atmospheric-pressure afterglow mass spectrometry (FAPA-MS). The innovation lies in using polyethyleneimine (PEI), derived from poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) hydrolysis, as the base for MIP synthesis. PEI was functionalized with furfuryl glycidyl ether, butyl glycidyl ether, or glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride to achieve selective adsorption properties, while unmodified PEI was also evaluated. Crosslinking with 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether in the presence of 2,4,5-T created molecularly imprinted cavities. Among the synthesized MIPs, butyl glycidyl ether-functionalized PEI exhibited the highest adsorption capacity (685 mg g-1), attributed to enhanced hydrophobic interactions and template affinity. Incorporating these MIPs with FAPA-MS achieved a limit of detection of 0.0391 μM, improving by two orders of magnitude compared to direct analysis and one order over non-imprinted polymers (NIPs). The method exhibited strong linearity (R2 > 0.99), high recovery rates (within 8.3 % of the true values), and excellent precision, with an intra-day relative standard deviation (RSD) below 6.0 % and an inter-day RSD below 8.6 %. This research represents the first application of functionalized PEI in MIP synthesis for ambient mass spectrometry. The approach enables rapid, direct quantification of 2,4,5-T with minimal sample preparation, offering a versatile and efficient platform for detecting hazardous organic contaminants in environmental monitoring.
