59.6% With potassium carbonate; In N,N-dimethyl-formamide; at 130℃; for 24h; To a solution of l -bromo-2,5-dimethyl-4-nitrobenzene (20 g, 87 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (200 mL), 3-(methylthio)phenol ( 1 3.41 g, 96 mmol); potassium carbonate (36.0 g, 261 mmol) was added. The reaction mixture was heated to 130 C for 24 h. After completion of reaction, the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and diluted with water. The miture was extracted with ethyl acetate; organic layer was washed with water, followed by brine; dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate and concentrated. The crude product was purified by column chromatography (Hexane/Ethyl Acetate 8:2) to provide (3- (2,5-dimethyl-4-nitrophenoxy)phenyl)(methyl)sulfane ( 1 5 g, 59.6 % yield).
