With n-butyllithium; sodium carbonate;tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium (0); In tetrahydrofuran; octanol; ethanol; hexane; water; toluene; EXAMPLE 4 3-Chloro-2-octyloxy-5-(4-octyloxyphenyl)-pyridine Lithium octanoate (prepared in advance from 13.02 g (100.00 mmol) of 1-octanol and 69 ml (110.00 mmol) of a 1.6 molar n-butyllithium solution in n-hexane in 40 ml of tetrahydrofuran at 0 C.) and 27.13 g (100.00 mmol) of 2,5-dibromo-3-chloropyridine are refluxed for 7 hours in 40 ml of tetrahydrofuran. The mixture is subsequently partitioned between aqueous sodium chloride solution and ether, the ether phase is washed twice with aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried over sodium sulfate and filtered, and the filtrate is freed from the solvent. Chromatographic purification (silica gel/hexane:ethyl acetate 9:1) gives 18.19 g (59.80 mmol) of 5-bromo-3-chloro-2-octyloxypyridine. STR21 3.16 g (9.86 mmol) of 5-bromo-3-chloro-2-octyloxypyridine, 2.47 g (9.86 mmol) of <strong>[121554-09-4]4-octyloxybenzeneboronic acid</strong>, 0.11 g (0.10 mmol) of tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)-palladium(0) and 2.09 g (19.72 mmol) of sodium carbonate are heated at 80 C. for 3 hours in 90 ml of toluene, 60 ml of ethanol and 30 ml of water. The mixture is subsequently partitioned between aqueous sodium chloride solution and ether, the organic phase is washed with aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated, and the product is purified by chromatography (silica gel/hexane:ethyl acetate 9:1), giving 2.85 g of 3-chloro-2-octyloxy-5-(4-octyloxyphenyl)pyridine.
