The TMBIM (Transmembrane BAX Inhibitor Motif Containing) family includes six proteins: BI-1, GAAP, Lfg3, GHITM, TMBIM5, and TMBIM6. These proteins possess multiple transmembrane domains and are predominantly localized to the membranes of various cell organelles. The TMBIM family is involved in cellular survival pathways through mechanisms such as apoptosis inhibition, calcium channel regulation, and antioxidant stress resistance. Gene expression is tissue-specific, and mutations may affect their functionality, associated with the development of various diseases.
