91% With potassium carbonate; In acetonitrile; at 20℃; General procedure: To a suspension of methyl 3,5-dihydroxybenzoate (1.0 eq.) or methyl 2,5-dihydroxybenzoate (1.0 eq.) and K2CO3 (3.0 eq.) in CH3CN was added dimethyl sulfate (2.4 eq) and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. After evaporation of CH3CN, the residue was extracted with CH2Cl2 to give 1 or 10.
