General procedure: A mixture of trimethyl orthoformate (1 mmol), amine(2 mmol) (Scheme 1) or O-phenylenediamine (1.3 mmol) (Scheme 2) was taken in a 5 ml glass test tube with a total reaction volume of 0.4-0.5 mlapproximately. The reaction mixture was placed at room temperature forspecified time under ultrasonic irradiation, performed in a Bandelin SonorexSuper RK 510 H ultrasonic bath with inner tank dimensions; l w d:300 240 150 mm, exterior dimensions; l w h: 325 265 305 mm,frequency: 35 kHz and ultrasonic peak output: 640 W/. Progress of the reactionwas monitored by TLC (silica gel). After completion of the reaction the mixturewas concentrated under reduced pressure. To calculate the reaction yield analiquot (1 mg) of the reaction mixture was dissolved in methanol (1 ml) andsubjected to HPLC analysis (Agilent 1100 series, mobile phase-watercontaining 0.5% acetic acid and acetonitrile in gradient system, flow rate-0.7 ml/min, column-RP-18, column temp-300, wavelength-254 nm) andpercentage yield of compound was obtained based on calculated peak area.The crude product thus obtained was purified by the process of crystallizationto afford the corresponding pure N,N0-diarylsubstituted formamidines or,respectively, the benzimidazole in good to excellent yields. The physical data(1H, 13C NMR, HRMS and IR) of these known compounds were found to beidentical with those reported in the literature.

General procedure: To a solution of aryl halide (1.0 equivalence) and boronic acid (1.1 equivalence) in 1,4-Dioxane (1.0 M), was added potassium carbonate (2.0 equivalence, 2.0 M aqueous solution) followed by palladium catalyst [1,1?-bis(diphenylphoshphino)ferrocene]-dichloropalladium (II) 1:1 complex with dichloromethane (0.10 equivalence). The reaction mixture was degassed for 5 minutes by bubbling nitrogen gas directly into the solution using syringe needle. The reaction vessel was closed tightly and stirred at 100 oC for overnight or until the completion of reaction as judged by TLC. The reaction mixture was filtered through a pad of silica/celite to remove the catalyst, poured into water (25 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (3 x 25 mL), the organic layer was washed with water (20 mL), dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated and purified by chromatography.
