89% With boron tribromide In dichloromethane; waterInert atmosphere To a dichloromethane (CH2Cl2, 22 mL) solution of 2,3-DMTA (0.5 g, 2.51mmol) was added boron tribromide (BBr3, 1 M in CH2Cl2, 10.3 mL) under argon atmosphere. After the mixture was stirred for 4 h, water (22 mL) was added to the mixture, which was further stirred overnight. The mixture was extracted with CHCl3, the organic layer was dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated to dryness. The residue was recrystallized from CH2Cl2/hexane to afford the target in 89percent yield. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz): δ (ppm) 10.90 (s,2H), 10.03 (s, 2H), 7.28 (s, 2H).
