YieldReaction ConditionsOperation in experiment
57% A solution of 3-oxotetrahydrofuran (4.97 mmol; preparation described in Tetrahedron 1991, 47, 6975-6982) in 20 ml of tetrahydrofuran is added to 20 ml of a commercially available solution of 0.5 M ethynylmagnesium bromide in tetrahydrofuran (10 mmol, Aldrich) cooled beforehand to 0° C. The mixture is then stirred for 4 hours at ambient temperature and a saturated solution of NH4Claq is added. The mixture is extracted with ethyl acetate and the organic phases are then combined, washed with a saturated solution of NaClaq, dried over sodium sulphate, filtered, and concentrated under vacuum. After purification by silica column chromatography, 319 mg (2.79 mmol) of (+-)-3-ethynyltetrahydro-3-furanol are obtained in the form of a yellow oil with a yield of 57percent.
