Chemistry Organic Building Blocks Isocyanides
An isocyanide, also known as an isonitrile or carbylamine, is an organic compound that contains the functional group –N+≡C-. It is an isomer of the closely related nitrile functional group (–C≡N).
Isocyanides display a distinctive and prominent absorption band in their infrared spectra(IR) within the range of 2165-2110 cm-1.
The prefix is isocyano because it is the isomer of the corresponding nitrile (–C≡N). The linkage between the organic fragment and the isocyanide group occurs via the nitrogen atom, rather than the carbon.
In methyl isocyanide, the C-N bond length measures 115.8 picometers, and the C-N-C bond angles are approximately 180 degrees.
